Creating fire with Fire-by-friction has been one of my greatest teachers and one of the skills I most passionate about.  For so many years I approached fire making as a careless act of throwing ignitable material together, and applying a flame - usually from a lighter.  Then I learned fire-by-friction techniques and a whole new world opened up to me.  I begin to develop an intimate and dynamic relationship with fire.  The first time I created fire by these ancient technologies, something ignited in me, and ignites in everyone, that once lit will never go out.

With all earth-based skills, preparation is essential. When most people make fire, 25% of their time is spent preparing and 75% trying to light the fire. The way I teach fire-by-friction is the opposite, that is, 75% preparation and 25% lighting the fire. Fire is an incredibly powerful tool in the wilderness. In fact, most of us are in relationship with fire everyday. Learning fire-by-friction brings us into direct relationship with fire in a way that communication occurs, where fire becomes far more than just a tool, but a relationship.

In this workshop, the basics of fire-by-friction you will:

  • Learn the basics of fire-by-friction and fire building techniques
  • Make your own bow drill kit
  • Practice making fire with guidance from facilitators
  • Learn the many uses of fire
