Great Earth School

Great Earth School

Empowering Genius Within

The Great Earth School is a yearlong training providing leadership skills that are place-based, nature-informed and oriented towards building a culture of vitality.  Through 4 in-person intensives, you receive an education designed to meet your particular capacities and gifts.  It is our core belief that everyone is born with a specific gift, and our life journey is to make this gift evident in the world. In a time when the demands of modernity are ever more invasive into all aspects of life, now more than ever, a holistic eduction is required to fortify the capacity to deliver one's gift.

Great Earth School is this holistic education.

Vision through Embodiment

The embodiment intensive is where your year long journey begins.  This is an essential part of the curriculum, as the physical is the doorway upon which we will ground our journey from beginning to end.

To root your vision in the world requires a deep root of being in the physical world, making decisions from wholeness and potential.

In addition, guest teachers will bring practical teachings to undertand the mechanics of the self, attune to local plant life, and how to work with dreams to wake up your consciousness.

This intensive is highly physical.  We will be on our feet, in movement for several hours each day.

We will...

  • Develop a physical practice that increases awareness of the ritual arc present in nature and our bodies
  • Begin the inquiry into your personal biography and how it relates to vision.
  • Identify the call of the soul.
  • Introduce nature-informed leadership and the philosophy of the earth.
  • Work together to discover your creative edge and move with creative life force

Program Details

The Great Earth School is an initiatory experience designed to give you the skills to discover and live into your purpose - what we often refer to as vision, gift, or genius.  The foundation of the what we teach is rooted in connection with nature.  Our ethos and philosophy is informed through this connection, as this connection naturally creates the context for vision to form.

Our mission is to prepare, educate, and guide individuals into their vision - the particular gift you are here to give to the world.  The curriculum is designed to bring you into connection with what matters to you, and less 'about' things.  The school is experiential, bridging your awareness into connection with community.

Intensives are 6-days in length (aside from the wilderness intensive which is 9-days) and can be considered an initiation into a specific art that provide you with the tools to understand your particular path.  In each intensive there are core practices and experiences that occur in every intensive, building a strong foundation of practice.

The school actively questions current paradigms of education, culture, and spirituality, while looking towards our more ancient roots of relationship with nature to guide us into a viable future.  This school will test you physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

In addition to the core teachings of each intensive, within all intensives we teach hands-on skills to bring you into connection with nature.  This includes wilderness skills, permaculture, creative practices, service work in the community, and bundles of joy and play.

Darren Silver, MA

Source & Lead Instructor

Darren Silver is a rite of passage guide, ceremonialist, and innovative educator.

Ever since Darren was a kid he immersed himself deep in the sanctuary of nature, following stream beds, hawks and box turtles in the thick Virginia forests.  This led him at the age of twenty to begin his studies with renowned author and teacher, Tom Brown Jr., at the Tracker School, learning the ways of wilderness living skills, tracking, healing and the vision quest.  Darren’s experience at the Tracker School was the beginning of a journey towards remembering how to live within the consciousness of the earth.  Twenty years later, Darren continues to study within the lineage of the Tracker School and the healing philosophy of NIASZIIH.

Locally and internationally, Darren guides vision quests, mens retreats, teen rites of passage, and embodiment workshops for youth, adults, men and women.  He can be very gentle, wild, fierce, always bringing deep care to the people who work with him.  He was taught very early on that the first medicine is water, and the second his humor.  Working with Darren, you can bet humor will be part of the teaching.

An avid dancer, for over 10 years, Darren was trained in SomaSource, a rites of passage based model of movement rooted in the 5 Rhythms.  He teaches dance as part of his residential trainings and is passionate about teaching embodiment practices as a way to better discover our communication between the body, soul, and nature.

In addition, he is trained in the art of Cowry Shell Divination as brought to the West and passed down from the Dagara elder Malidoma Somé.  Darren’s teacher Kedar Brown, an early student of Somé, has mentored Darren for over a decade in the ways of ritual and divination.  Divinations are focused on bringing ourselves in right relationship with our gift, ancestors, and the worlds of nature.

In 2016, Darren received a Masters degree in the Mythology of Initiation, where he rigorously studied mystical and indigenous teachings pertaining to major life transitions and thresholds.  Darren pushed the edges of traditional academia with his experiential approach and revivifying cantor of mythical speech, in hopes that his academic contributions can inspire others to have an intimate relationship with the worlds of nature.

In 2023, Darren founded the Great Earth School - a school devoted to empowering the genius within us all, ultimately living a life of Vision.  A gifted storyteller and apprentice to the old myths, Darren weaves the power of the natural world, Vision, and community in remembrance of regenerative culture.

     Joshua Paquette

Herbalism

Joshua holds certification in herbalism from the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism (NAIMH), as well as from the Columbines School of Botanical Studies. He began his formal study of the natural world in 2005 at the University of Maine, Orono where he was introduced to the craft of environmental education. Since then he has had the opportunity to work with some outstanding botanists and herbalists in the field. His time with Howie Brounstein and Steven Yeager at the Columbines School of Botanical Studies in Eugene, Oregon has enlivened his passion for botany, ecology, and wildcrafting ethics. His studies with Paul Bergner at The North American Institute of Medical Herbalism in Boulder, Colorado revealed the powers of vitalism as a therapeutic approach to healing as well as a way of living—namely, that our body's innate intelligence does much of work, one has only to encourage the flames a bit and step out of the way (which is much more challenging than it sounds).

Joshua teaches classes on field botany, wildcrafting ethics, herbalism, myth and story. He is a core faculty member at Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism (CSCH) in Lafayette, Colorado, where he teaches botany, nutrition, herbalism, and natural therapeutics. His other time is spent operating a small carpentry remodeling business called Redstone Woodwork, LLC out Boulder, CO. A letter from Darren

Dear Prospective Student,

Thank you for your interest in the Great Earth School.  Truth is, I never imagined I would be teaching what you will learn.  When I first made the commitment to walk a path of vision, I was filled with an insatiable hunger because I needed grow and heal myself.  For nearly 20 years I have been refining the path of vision and how to guide others onto their path.  With a team of teachers, I have woven together a holistic education that prepares you to move in the world with purpose, direction, and a deep knowledge of yourself.

For many of us, at a young age we had an uninterrupted connection to the whole of life. This was certainly the case for me, until it slowly was overtaken by modern education.  Grade school, and even University taught me many ways of how to participate in the modern world, but utterly failed in giving me the tools to live in connection with the earth and to listen to the deeper instructions of my soul. I had to learn this elsewhere. Often times, in very unconventional means that required nothing short of full commitment for me to learn and grow.

What sent me back towards the landscape of my vision was my first of many classes at Tom Brown Jr’s. Tracker School. It was during the standard course that Tom asked the class a series questions that up until that point, I had never considered. It sent me towards my interior landscape.  Since then I have worked in many different fields, from storytelling trainings in the corporate world to wilderness therapy for teens. The Great Earth School is a distilled training giving you the tools to live your vision regardless of what context you're working within.

Informed by the philosophy of the earth, the vision of our school is to remember through physical, emotional, and spiritual practices a culture of vision and leadership.  Given the hundreds of years of disconnection from the earth, dismantling the conditions of modernity is an enormous task.  Our approach to the challenges individuals face, to systemic challenges worldwide are through the lens of reclaiming the relationship with the earth. If you’re seeking to have your ideologies reinforced, or experience a training of concepts, then this school is not for you.  There are plenty of schools, trainings and workshops out there about purpose, manifesting your dream job, financial abundance etc.  The Great Earth School is applied education every step of the way, bringing you through a series of rigorous initiatory experiences.

We are focused on remembering what it means to belong once again amongst the whole of creation and contribute your unique gift.  My deepest desire is that the Great Earth School reaches those that want to live a life of empowered vision and rapture.  If you feel the call, I will meet you there.
